Excerpt From My upcoming novel
Devious Wives
Layla walked over to her seat, heels clicking along the way, she
looked around to see the population of the visiting room was majority
black. Layla shook her head in distain,
the smartest brothers, are behind these walls, she thought to herself.
Layla plopped down in her chair, she opted to sit in the chair furthest
to the wall so that she could see what was going on around her. She
turned heads no doubt, but she never thought men would actually drool
over her in front of their girlfriends, she watched the angry faces of
various women being thrown her way, ugh she thought to herself, I hope
none of these bitches try to get out of line, because I look to cute
today for all that drama. So instead of her usual I wish a motherfucka
would look, she politely smiled at everyone, staring and turned her
head, she wasn’t in the mood and wanted to get this visit over with
quickly as possible. Although she missed her husband terribly, the
objective of this trip was strictly, business.
Layla
watched her husband emerge from behind the steel bars, he looked like he
had aged overnight, the sparkle in his eyes was long gone and placed
with a look of dread and weariness.
Layla stood as he finally approached the table they hugged and kissed, more like friends than husband and wife.
Layla wanted to hold onto her husband for dear life, although he
aggravated her deeply she still loved him, being in his arms again made
what she was about to do slightly more difficult, but she felt she David
had given her no other choice. Layla finally let her husband go and
took her place in the small chair across from him, she watched him as he
slowly set in the seat across from her.
Both of them sat
in silence for a moment not knowing exactly what to say, Layla fiddled
with her hands as she looked around at the other women visiting, loved
ones. She saw a woman with a young boy, sitting on her lap, she was
pretty latino girl, who looked like she had the weight of the world on
her shoulders. Layla knew instantly that she did not want to be that
young girl, and she knew deep in her heart that David was not capable of
what they were accusing him of, but she played dumb all the same as she
finally broke the silence. “So did you do it” she asked already knowing
what the answer to this question was going to be.
David looked
over his shoulder, as if his wife were asking someone else the question.
He wanted to scream at the top of his lungs, but was able to keep his
composure, he didn’t want to give the already hostile guards a reason to
put the baton to his ass. They already hounded him enough when he first
got to lockup, for his very smart mouth, although David was no slouch
in the fighting department, he just wasn’t built for this life. He hated
having to look over his shoulder at all times, he has only been locked
up all of two days, and he was starting to feel overwhelmed, his pretty
boys looks always caught the attention of unwanted eyes, and he did his
best to avoid them. He knew there was no way in hell he would allow
himself to become another man’s bitch, he would go down fighting first.
David slowly ran his fingers through his thick dark hair before he
answered his wife “No Layla I did not do it,” he took a deep breath as
he sanked further into his chair. As much as he wanted to cry out, he
knew his current circumstances couldn’t allow him to do so, he
definitely would be thrown to the wolves, he was only in county but in
here it was almost as bad as being in prison, David’s first night there,
he heard someone had been stabbed, and killed in the caferteria an hour
before he arrived.
Layla reached over and touched her
husband hand, she couldn’t deny she was hurting for him, but she was
also experiencing some hurt of her own, if he had just come straight
home instead of deciding to stop by his whore’s home, they would not be
going through this in the first place, but Layla wanted to know more
before she went any further with her plan. Before she could speak David
spoke “How are the kids,” he asked not really looking her in the face,
he missed his boys, they were his life, he hated the fact that his
infactuation with Rosyln, had him missing in action lately.
Layla rolled her eyes “now he his concerned about the boys” she thought
to herself. “They are fine she replied, now sitting up, starring at her
husband really forcing him to look at her, her stare was ice cold, to
mask the hurt she was feeling inside, he didn’t even ask about her “I’m
fine too in case you cared.”
David let out a sigh, really
not in the mood for Layla and her attitude, she always had to make
everything about her, he loved her, but he was slowly falling out of
love with her, her need to be in control was killing their marriage. She
never once stop to think that she was the one that pushed him right
into Rosyln arms, of course he had affairs before, but somehow he
managed catch feeling for Rosyln, he knew he was treading dangerous
waters, but she made him feel like a man. Something Layla seemed to
forget over the years, but right now he could really use a friend, so he
wanted to put all ill feelings aside until this whole fiasco was over.
David looked at his wife and was finally able to see the hurt in
her eyes, he felt bad for how he had been ignoring her, he gently
caressed her hands, “I’m sorry Layla” for everything he said sincerely.
Layla wanted to cry, as she listened to her husband apologize to
her, she waited so long for him to finally admit his wrongs, even if she
wasn’t willing to admit hers, atleast she still knew that he cared, she
almost felt bad for what she was about to do, she looked at her husband
giving him a half smile. No matter how much he wanted to set the mood
where they could be a peace with each other she just couldn’t let go,
she pushed all her love and morals to the back of her mind as she went
for the guzzler. “So David, why exactly did you go to Rosyln’s house”
she slowly released her hand from his and sat all the way back in her
chair to stare at her husband, she wanted to look deep into his eyes, as
he lied to her face.
David wanted to strangle Layla, no
matter how much he tried to make things right she was hell bent on
making him suffer, he sanked deeper into his chair, he diverted his eyes
to the floor as he began to speak. “I wanted to see if she was okay,
after she never returned my calls about the business trip” it was an
half truth but there was no way he was going to reveal, his real
intentions for stopping by, he genuinely cared for Rosyln, and had even
considered leaving Layla for her, but he knew how devious Layla could be
and didn’t want to put Rosyln at risk.
Layla stared at her
husband not convinced, but she didn’t press the issue, as she could see
he was going to continue lying to her. “Well, I see, you don’t mind
going the extra mile for your employees do you?” she asked crossing her
legs, waiting for his reply.
David, didn’t bother with a
response, he was growing tired of dealing with his insecure wife, and
wished he had declined the visit he was about to stand and signal the
guard, when Layla touched his hand.
David starred down at his
wife momentarily, he really didn’t want to hear what she had to say, but
he figured it would be the last time he would see her for awhile, he
just couldn’t deal with her right now, he had to much on his mind. In a
defeated voice he asked “what is it Layla?”
Layla was hurt
by the look in his eyes, but chose to ignore it, “what if I said I have a
way of getting you out of here,” she said, smiling her devious smile.
David slowly sat back down in his chair now very interested in what
Layla had to say, he knew his case didn’t look good and if there was
anyway, he could get out of this he very well welcomed any chance of him
ever being a free man again. “How is that possible?” David asked
curious to know how in the world Layla would be able to pull something
like this off.
“Well let’s just say, I have been watching
your secretary for awhile, and I know more than you think, David”, she
responded in a condescending tone letting him know that she was full
aware of what was going on between the two.
David again
diverted his eyes to the floor, he now that she had literally caught him
with his pants down if she had been following Rosyln for awhile, not
wanting to press the issue any further he quickly diverted his attention
back to her discovery, “What do you know, and how is it going to help
me?” he asked curiously
Layla uncrossed her legs as she sat
up, so she could be a little closer to her husband, I can’t reveal that
at the moment, but I have one request for my help in this unfortunate
mishap.
David looked at his wife suspiciously he didn’t
like the look in her eye, and he knew it meant he was going to have to
pay dearly. David ran his fingers through his hair once again, he sighed
feeling defeated all over again, “What is it Layla” regretting asking
before the last word rolled off his tongue.
Layla pulled
out some papers from the briefcase she had hidden by her feet, and
shoved them across the table at David. He picked up and slowly began to
look over them, a smile crept over Layla face as she saw the frown that
began to take place over his forehead, although she hated that things
had to be this way, she loved the feeling of being in control. This
mostly stemmed from her childhood and how she had been treated but that
is another story all together.
David face became distorted
as he continued to look over the documents, “what the fuck is this?” he
asked his wife through clenched teeth, he never believed in hitting
women, but if he ever got out of this he didn’t know what he would do.
He knew he was on the verge of losing his cool, and knew he had to get
out of their before one of them ended up hurt. He threw the papers back
at Layla, as he proceeded leave once again.
“Fine have it
your way” Layla said, as she gathered all her documents. She paused
momentarily adding fuel to the fire “but don’t think my boys will ever
set foot in prison or a jail.” This caused David to stop in his tracks,
he almost forgot about his children in his fit of rage. Layla smiled as
he stood for a moment, she hated doing this and using the children, but
she had to let David know he could not cross her and get away with it.
Whether David knew or not, Layla had a lot more scars than she cared to
reveal, and she learned at a young age, that it was better to get em or
get got, and she hasn’t been gotten yet.
David was at his
whits end he could not believe she was asking not only for ownership of
his company, but a percentage, of another company that his fathered
owned. How the hell she knew about the business beat him, but he had to
admit Layla was always on top of her game. She also wanted her name
solely on the house and all his other properties including the beach
house he just rented to one of his golfing buddies. David knew she had
him by the balls, but he didn’t know if he could trust her to get him
out of here, but Layla was never one to say she would do something and
not see it through, but he still had to ask “How do I know you won’t
just take my shit and leave me in here to rot” he looked at her with
pure hate in his eyes, he knew she could be a bitch but this just topped
the cake, she was about take everything he had work so hard for and
there was nothing he could do about it. He could be facing life in
prison, and just couldn’t take that risk he could allow his boys to be
raised by such a cold hearted bitch.
Layla was a taken back
by his choice of words, but refused to let him see the hurt, Layla
smiled as she folded her arms across her chest, “David you should know
me well enough to know that I’m always a woman of my word.” She motioned
the guard over to there table never taking her eyes off of David “the
choice is yours David.” Either way, I will be okay, but I much rather
have my husband at home with me, so we can work on rebuilding our
marriage.
David looked at his wife like she was crazy, he
slowly began to fidget in his chair, his hands started to itch, he was
contemplating choking the shit out of her, but he was already in enough
trouble.
The guard approached the table holding a pen in his
hand, he looked down at the couple and could tell by the look on the
inmates face that today had not been his day, he thought the man was
about to sign divorce papers, and he shook his head as he stood in front
of the pitiful soul.
Layla graciously took the pen from the guards hands, “So what’s it gonna be sweetie” the choice is yours.”
David snatched the pen from Layla’s hand and signed all documents,
as he flipped each page gracing his signature he felt as if he was
signing his life away. How at this very moment he wished he had listened
to his mother, about Layla’s conniving ass, now he was fully aware what
his wife was capable off. David finished signing the papers and stood,
preparing to leave, he turned to face his wife, “You are a real bitch,
you know that he spat.” His stare was cold and mean.
Layla
smiled her devious smile, she slowly stood gathering all the papers in
her hand, “it takes one to know one,” she quickly turned on her heels,
and walked out of the visiting area, brushing her shoulder’s off. “
Singing the Jay Z song in her head “You gotta get that dirt off your
shoulders.”
